FILM LANGUAGE - A FILM I LIKE
For the film I like, I've chosen Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, released in 1989 by Orion Pictures and directed by Stephen Herek.
(The original trailer for Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure)
The film stars Keanu Reeves as Ted "Theodore" Logan, Alex Winter as Bill S. Preston Esq, and George Carlin as Rufus. It's a time-travel comedy, with a plot that revolves around Bill and Ted travelling through time to cherry pick historical figures for their final history report; failing this report prevents their dream of becoming a world famous band.
I discovered the film in 2016, catching the second half of it on TV. Even without proper context of what was going on, the sheer insanity of what was going on and the style of comedy was really engaging, and appealed to my sense of humour in every way.
One scene I especially enjoy is the encounter at the Circle-K. After struggling to study for their history report, Bill and Ted go to the Circle-K convenience store for help. After getting the cold shoulder, the two start to give up. But with a crash of thunder, a phone booth appears before them. A man walks out, introducing himself with as Rufus and a "greetings, my excellent friends".
(This scene is infamous for the exchange "What number are we thinking of?" "69, dudes!")
("Put them in the iron maiden." "Iron Maiden? EXCELLENT!" *guitar riff*)
I love everything about this film. It has a catchy track listing, the soundtrack is exciting & engaging, and the characters are likeable! My personal favourite is Ted, mostly due to Keanu Reeves' stellar performance.
(Keanu Reeves being a pure lad)
The film has two sequels; Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey which released in 1991, and Bill and Ted Face The Music, which releases in 2020. Bogus Journey was, in my opinion, nowhere near as good as the original. It gets the characters wrong, only one of the new characters is somewhat memorable, and even with how insane the original was, goes too far this time.
But for me, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is an 80s classic that I'll love for the rest of my life. 10/10.
