REPORT PROPOSAL - TEEN TITANS

This post will be comparing the original Teen Titans series from 2003, and it's reboot Teen Titans GO! from 2013.

It is important to note that both series are based on the Teen Titans comic books published by DC Comics. The characters and titles have undergone changes over it's publication, so it's not really possible to name which run of comics was the main influence.

TEEN TITANS (2003)

Teen Titans was an animated series produced by DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation, developed by Glen Murakami and Sam Register. It ran on Cartoon Network from 2003 to 2006.

The series followed a team of five superheroes; Robin (aka Dick Grayson), Raven (aka Rachel Roth), Starfire (aka Koriand'r), Cyborg (aka Victor Stone) and Beast Boy (aka Garfield Logan). Throughout their time acting as superheroes, they come to fight enemies like Deathstroke, Terra and Trigon, to name a few.

The series had a serialised structure, so each season had a different overarching storyline. Season 1 primarily revolved around the Titans fighting Deathstroke, who presented himself as an arch nemesis. Teen Titans went on to get 5 seasons, a TV special and a TV movie. It also inspired a run of comics, titled Teen Titans Go! (not to be confused with the reboot series of the same name). The series aimed for a more mature tone as time went on, according to a writer on the Teen Titans GO! writing team (source).

Teen Titans was praised by both critics and audiences alike, holding a 92% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, paired with a 95% audience rating. iMDB users give it a 7.8/10, and Common Sense Media gives it a 3/5, saying it was "All action all the time", but may not be suitable for younger viewers.

TEEN TITANS GO! (2013)

Teen Titans GO! is an animated series produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros Animation, and was developed by Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath. It started airing on Cartoon Network in 2013, and is still running.

Teen Titans GO! takes a different approach to the characters and stories when compared to it's predecessor; this time, the Titans are all roomates in Titan Tower, and the series is episodic and comedic in nature, with the status quo always being restored by the end of the epiosde. There are less supervillains and fight sequences, since stories are more focused on the Titans and the comedic situations they land in.

Teen Titans GO! is able to get away with more than the original Teen Titans series could, due to it's less serious nature and detachment from any kind of canon. With this in mind, they tend to make fun of DC Comics characters like Batman and Wonder Woman, alternate versions of themselves, and even the audience itself.

So far, TTG has had over 275 episodes spanning over 5 seasons, including an in-progess sixth season. There has also been a theatrically released film, Teen Titans GO! To The Movies, a TV movie, Teen Titans Go! vs Teen Titans, and a run of comic books based on the series.

This reboot was not very well received; as it stands, Teen Titans GO! has a 40% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 5.2/10 from iMDB and a 3.9/10 from TV.com. Common Sense Media gave it a 4/5, but this website's main metric is more-so used to show parents how 'safe' a show is for children. Joseph Murphy of WhatCulture says that the "[S]eries has so much potential, which is why it is upsetting[...] Teen Titans Go! has been a failure.

Many criticise the writing, which reduces the characters from being layered complex characters into flat one-dimensional caricatures of themselves. The TTG team has seen the criticisms and complaints that people have, and wrote around them in an episode of the show, titled "The Fourth Wall". Other episodes like "The Return of Slade" and "Let's Get Serious" are also intended to poke fun at complaints about the series.
